オープンな気持ちで交流

Interact with an open mind

今回も、多くの方に集まってもらえました。もちろんいろいろな国の方と楽しい話ができました。国際交流の基本は、オープンな気持ちで、話を聞いててみることにつきます。いろいろな発見ができます。英語ができなくとも、やさしい日本語を相手が理解してくれます。この、アウトドアクッキングにも、次々と、あたらしい仲間が増えてきました。中国の方、インドの方、カナダの方、ベトナムの方その家族のかた、みなさん、頼んでいないのに、お国の、調味料や食べ物等も持って来てくれます。話を聞けば聞くほど、日本で頑張って学び、働いています。難しい日本語を、少しづつ覚えながら、日本人のコミュニティーの中で努力しています。

Once again, we had a great turnout. Of course, I had the pleasure of chatting with people from all over the world. The key to international exchange is simply to keep an open mind and listen to what others have to say. You’ll discover so many new things. Even if you don’t speak English, people will understand you if you use simple Japanese. We’ve also been welcoming new members to our outdoor cooking group one after another. People from China, India, Canada, and Vietnam—along with their families—all bring seasonings and foods from their home countries without even being asked. The more I talk to them, the more I realize how hard they’re working to study and build lives here in Japan. They’re making an effort to fit into the Japanese community while gradually learning the difficult Japanese language.

日本語は難しい

Japanese is difficult

ベトナムの方はベトナムでN3までのレベルに合格して日本に来たそうですが、文法の違いや漢字が難しいと言っていました。ベトナムでは英語も小学校から学びますが、英語とは文法がにていて、学びやすいそうですが、日本語はとても難しいと言います。円安で、給料だって以前ほどもらえなくて、それでも日本を選んできてくれることにはありがたいです。

I heard that this person from Vietnam passed the N3 Japanese Language test back home before coming to Japan, but they mentioned that the differences in grammar and the kanji characters are difficult. Although English is taught in Vietnam starting in elementary school, and they say the grammar is similar to English so it’s easy to learn, they say Japanese is very difficult. With the weak yen, their salary isn’t as high as it used to be, but I’m grateful that they still chose to come to Japan.

AIエージェントで仕事をしています　I work with AI agents

インドから来ているIT技術者は、勤めている日本のIT企業ではAIでアプリプログラムのテストをやっているとのことで、詳しく聞いてみると、AIエージェントを使ってのテストでプログラムチェックをしているそうです、私たちが、使っているchatGPTやGeminiはいわば、受動的な使い方で、質問をして答えを聞くというだけですが、AIエージェントでは、AIに命令をいれ自動的にエージェントをやらせる、能動的な使い方です、いわば、高度な技術者なのです。基本的には、会社で使うのは、プログラム言語で日本語を使うことは必要ないそうですが、それでも日本語を一生懸命勉強していました。とても努力しているとかんじました。

An IT engineer from India told me that at the Japanese IT company where he works, they use AI to test application programs. When I asked him for more details, he explained that they use AI agents to perform program checks. While the ChatGPT and Gemini we use are, so to speak, passive—we simply ask questions and receive answers—AI agents involve an active approach where we issue commands to the AI to automatically perform tasks. In other words, he is a highly skilled engineer. He mentioned that, generally speaking, there’s no need to use Japanese in the programming languages his company uses, but he was still studying Japanese very hard. I could really sense how much effort he was putting into it.

日本に良い印象を持っている

Have a favorable impression of Japan

集まってくれた方々は、総じて日本に対してよい印象を持ってくれています。いわば、日本を選んでくれている方々なのです。日本人としてもうれしい限りです。私も、海外での生活はアフリカ、ジョルダン、ベトナムと5年以上ですが、現地のコミュニティーにいつもたすけられました。現地の支援者はとてもありがたかったです。

The people who gathered here generally have a positive impression of Japan. In a sense, they are people who have chosen Japan. As a Japanese person, I couldn’t be happier. I myself have lived abroad for over five years—in Africa, Jordan, and Vietnam—and I was always supported by the local communities. I am deeply grateful to the local supporters.

モロッコ人と結婚　Marrying a Moroccan

アフリカ、モロッコで働いているときに、相手を見つけ、結婚して今、日本で子育てをしながら働いているお母さんも来てくれました。まさに、家庭のなかにデユアルな文化を共有しながら生活しています。日本の文化だけではなく、多様な文化を共有して「ともに生きる」ということこそが、イノベーションを生んでくれると信じています。その家庭で育つお子さんの未来が楽しみです。

We were also joined by a mother who met her partner while working in Morocco, got married, and is now raising her children while working in Japan. Her family truly lives a life where they share a dual cultural background within their home. I believe that “living together”—sharing not just Japanese culture but a diverse range of cultures—is what sparks innovation. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for the children growing up in that family.

インターンとして支援しています　I am providing support as an intern

インターンとして支援してくれている、ベトナムからの大学院生もさんかしてくれました。修士研究はベトナムの子どもで、日本で学校に入り、勉強し、生活している子どもの考え方の研究です。ベトナム人に関わらず、日本で生活している、外国人の子どもたちの現状や考え方は私たちも知りたいです。

A graduate student from Vietnam who is assisting us as an intern also joined us. Her master’s thesis focuses on the perspectives of Vietnamese children who have enrolled in school in Japan and are studying and living here. We are also interested in learning about the current situation and perspectives of foreign children living in Japan, regardless of their nationality.

外国人の災害に対する意識を研究する高校生　High school students researching foreigners’ attitudes toward disasters

また日本の高校生で、日本に住む外国人たちが、感じている、防災情報理解に関わる研究を探求学習のテーマとしている高校生もボラﾝティアとしてきてくれました。日本語情報が理解できなければ、災害が多い日本での生活は危険です。メールから地震情報が届いても何をすればよいかの判断がつきません。この問題は、日本人でも難しいです。近くに住んでいる外国人はどのように考えていて、またその人ににどのように知らせるべきか、考えておかなければなりません。

We also welcomed high school students from Japan—including some who are studying the challenges foreign residents face in understanding disaster prevention information as part of their inquiry-based learning projects—as volunteers. Without the ability to understand information in Japanese, life in Japan—a country prone to disasters—can be dangerous. Even if earthquake alerts arrive via email, people may not know what to do. This is a challenge even for Japanese people. We must consider how foreign residents living nearby perceive the situation and how best to communicate with them.

人材育成の会社社長も参加　The president of a human resources development company also attended

また、人材育成を仕事としているキャリアコンサルティング会社の社長もボラﾝティアとして参加してくれました。社長の2人の娘さんは、アメリカ人、カナダ人と結婚したそうです。今後、日本が多様な外国人とともに、多文化共生の社会を形成していくうえで、自分らしい生き方、働き方のスタイルを発見することのお手伝いが可能だそうです。まだまだ、いろいろな方が参加してくれて、書ききれないですが。とても素敵な集まりだったと思いました。

In addition, the president of a career consulting firm specializing in human resource development joined us as a volunteer. I heard that his two daughters are married to an American and a Canadian. He mentioned that as Japan moves toward building a multicultural society alongside people from diverse backgrounds, he can help individuals discover their own unique ways of living and working. Many other people participated as well—too many to list here—but I thought it was a truly wonderful gathering.
